Welcome to Recommended, a monthly series about the things I’ve been consuming recently. Writing about trauma can be heavy, but one thing that makes it possible is living a good life outside of my work. Here are some of the things that have brought me joy over the last month.
Before we start, here are the articles I published this month:
Things to read
Tavi Gevinson’s Fan Fiction was the most ensorclling thing I read this month! I was feeling frazzled and the story was tremendous fun! Pair it with this podcast and this analysis by
.I also read Amy Krose Rosenthal’s Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life which I wanted to like more than I did. It’s a nifty format, but there wasn’t enough narrative to hold my attention. I ordered the book after listening to this podcast about the author’s Modern Love essay which is one of my favourites. Be sure to read it if you haven’t already!
Things to watch
The most memorable thing I watched this month was Back to Black, the film based Amy Winehouse’s life. It’s worth seeing, despite also being desperately sad.
Am also re-watching lots1, and finding that my over-taxed brain appreciates the comfort of a familiar story.
Things to listen to
🥹 Longform is ending! I’ve been listening since the very first episode 12 years ago, and have loved hearing writers talk about their work. Particular favourites include this conversation with
, all seven conversations with Ta-Nehisi Coates and this conversation about the intersection of cooking & writing with Samin Nosrat. I will miss it dearly. And if you’re not into writing, might I recommend this conversation with Mark Duplass about how he hacks the system to fund the shows he really wants to make?
Things to eat
I spent the first part of this month in Italy, eating all the pizza, pasta and gelato I could find!
Closer to home, I made these Cashew Tahini Bars for a vegan friend and they were delish!
I’ve got houseguests at the moment, and am excited to make this!
